Choosing a Skilled Plastic Surgeon To Perform Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Facial Plastic Surgery or any Cosmetic Surgery Procedure is Imperative. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon In Raleigh North Carolina Provides Guidelines. Raleigh Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Law, board certified in plastic surgery provides guidelines for choosing a qualified plastic surgeon to perform cosmetic plastic surgery.

An individual can begin learning about a physician before ever meeting him or her. Start by visiting the American Society of Plastic Surgery web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. This will allow you to find board certified plastic surgeons in your area.

Before meeting a physician, you can learn a lot by visiting the office. A good plastic surgery web site will provide information about plastic surgery and the surgeon's experience and credentials. A web site should also provide the surgeon's philosophy on aesthetic surgery and patient care. The office environment can give you insight into a physician's aesthetic ideal. Is the office elegant, beautiful, contemporary and immaculately clean? Or are the furnishings outdated, mismatched or cramped? The attention to detail in a waiting area and other areas of the office can be representative of the way a physician looks at the world. Another thing to look at is the office staff. In many offices, staff members are warm and natural looking. In other cases staff members can appear to have very obvious unnatural looking plastic surgery. Staff members with large obvious breast implants not in proportion with the rest of the body, inflated unnatural looking lips, or eyebrows lifted to a postion where they appear to be perpetually surprised can also provide insight to the physician's aesthetic ideal.

Important Questions

When you are making the decision to have plastic surgery, there are a number of extremely important questions that must be answered. Chief among them are the following:

•What exactly is it that I want to achieve?
•Am I a good candidate for the surgery I’m interested in?
•Are there less invasive or even non-surgical techniques that could fulfill (or perhaps partially, but adequately, fulfill) my needs?
•What is the best technique for achieving the result that I want?
•Is my physician able to educate me about ALL possible surgical options?
•Is my physician qualified to perform the surgery I am interested in?

An individual who is interested in an aesthetic enhancement should therefore seek a surgically-trained specialist that has knowledge of (and experience with) a wide range of both surgical and non-surgical techniques.

There is only ONE organization that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties http://www.abms.org/ which certifies plastic surgeons: The American Board of Plastic Surgery http://www.abplsurg.org/. Over the last several years there has been a proliferation of “Boards” with titles that include words such as “Plastic” and “Cosmetic” in them. Aside from The American Board of Plastic Surgery, NONE of these “Boards” are recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Visit the ABMS website to see which specialties have ABMS recognition.

Hospital Privileges?
A hospital has access to information and records that the general public does not. Hospitals also have tremendous exposure to liability for procedures performed within them. They therefore will only grant surgical privileges to physicians that can demonstrate appropriate training and experience.

Although many aesthetic surgical procedures are not performed in hospital operating rooms, the fact that a hospital has granted a surgeon privileges for a given procedure ensures that the surgeon has met an accepted standard of competence. It also means that your surgeon will be able to take care of you at a hospital should any complications from surgery arise.

If you are planning to have plastic surgery performed, you should do your due diligence to determine if your surgeon has the appropriate credentials. This issue can be settled by the following simple question: Does my surgeon have hospital privileges to perform my surgery?

Aesthetic Vision
If you are satisfied that your surgeon has the appropriate training, experience and credentials, then the next step is to determine if you and your surgeon are ‘on the same page’ aesthetically. As you are about to undertake a permanent alteration to your outward appearance, you should be comfortable with your surgeon personally, feel like you communicate easily, and feel like you have the same vision for the aesthetic improvement ahead.

Adequate communication is invaluable, and you should be able to communicate clearly and easily not only with your doctor, but also with your doctor’s staff. Over the course of preparing for and recovering from aesthetic surgery, your doctor’s staff will have an important and active role. You must be absolutely certain that your surgeon’s aesthetic sensibility matches your aesthetic goals.

Before and After Photos
An experienced Plastic Surgeon will have before and after photographs of the specific procedure you have in mind. Professional looking before and after photos with consistent lighting and consistent patient position is imperative. Before photos showing patients frowning and wearing no makeup, followed by an after photo of a smiling, made up patient with a new hairstyle is not a good representation of a surgical before and after. Likewise, a before photo showing the patient's midsection with arms down by the hips or straight out to the side followed by an after photo with arms lifted in the air is not an appropriate representation of a surgical before and after photo.

Patient privacy is imperative, but in every practice there are some patients who are happy to share their experiences with others considering the same procedure. An experienced surgeon with satisfied patients should have many before and after photos and also patients who can share their surgical experience first hand.

San Diego's Best Kept Secret...Breast Augmentation through the navel...faster, safer, better than the rest!

La Jolla, California -     Imagine being able to perform breast augmentation surgery for patients without any scars- and did we mention, going through the navel? Sounds pretty fantastic, but believe it or not, for one La Jolla Cosmetic Surgeon this is a common every day procedure. He has helped literally hundreds of women attain their goal of fuller and larger breasts without the traditional recovery time and scars associated with other surgical approaches.

Dr. Robert A. Shumway MD FACS, medical director of the Shumway Institute of Laser and Cosmetic Surgery located on the Scripps Campus in La Jolla, has been performing the TUBA method (or Transumbilical Breast Augmentation) for patients for over the past 7 years. While serving on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and as a mentor to the medical students at the University of California San Diego, Dr. Shumway has lectured and taught many of his peers with regard to this revolutionary approach. He holds the distinct position of being the only physician currently in San Diego and Orange counties who performs the TUBA approach for patients, and has proven himself to be a leader and pioneer in the continual evolution of the TUBA method.

The TUBA method is the safest and most effective manner to achieve breast augmentation for patients with little chance for complications both during and after surgery. A small incision is made along the inside rim of the navel (meaning no incisions are made on the breast or into the breast tissue) and superficial to the abdominal sheath through which the implants can be slid under the skin and placed either above or below the muscle. Since there is no bleeding associated with this approach, cautery and surgical drains are not necessary and as a result, patients recover quickly without postoperative pain. This single, distant incision has decreased the chance of a skin or implant infection by at least 50%! Best of all, no general anesthesia is needed.

For many women, confidence is directly related to the positive body image that they feel they can obtain in undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Society has created the image for women that curvaceous bust lines create beauty and may even help one attain social status and success throughout life. For this reason, many women seek out Dr. Shumway for their own personal aesthetic goals, and the desire to have this surgery performed in the safest, best, and most effective manner available.

In closing, remember a new procedure is only as good as it is safe, and the TUBA method has only the highest record of safety. With so many options and variations on the TUBA theme to breast augmentation, this approach has revealed itself to be very versatile as well for each unique patient.

We look forward to working together with you to bring this revolutionary procedure to the forefront of the community’s awareness, and welcome any questions and offer any support and or assistance to you and your staff in the creation of this news worthy story.

Ovations, a Philadelphia based salon and spa teams up with Main Line plastic surgeon Dr. Sherman E. Leis.

PHILADELPHIA, PA __ October 28, 2003 __ Ovations, Northern Liberties best known salon and spa, announced today that the Ovations group of stylists, estheticians and make-up artists have joined the Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery post surgery support system.

Dr. Leis’ patients will be referred to Ovations in order to receive follow up support with make-up, styling, and skin care. Additionally, the relationship will enable Ovation’s customers to explore treatments such as Botox, collagen, skin peels, micro-dermabrasion, laser and cosmetic surgery.

Co-owner and spa director Donald Curinga states, “My background is in nursing. Healing, nurturing and making people feel good is all part of our customer care credo. This new relationship will bring Ovations client care and services to the next level.” Ovations was already committed to being a part of growing trends in beauty, fashion and skin care, offering an extensive line of skin care services and products. Now, Ovations is responding to the inclusion of cosmetic surgery as a new mainstay of self-care.

Dr. Leis is a founding member and the first President of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. In addition to Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Leis also focuses part of his practice on working with burn patients and trauma victims. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly 6.6 million people had cosmetic surgery in 2002. The top five non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2002 were Botox injection, chemical peel, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, and sclerotherapy. In conjunction with Ovations treatments, clients may explore these cosmetic procedures, surgical or non-surgical, with Dr. Leis.

“Because of the partnership between Ovations and The Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a variety of esthetic improvements are available through our organization. This possibility is an important opportunity.” According to owner and salon director Richard Metzger, “Liking what you see in the mirror and loving what people say about your appearance is an important part of building confidence and self esteem. And that what Ovations works with you to achieve.”
